Bob and Daphne Balentine began making wine together in 1991, the same year they were married. What started out as a deep passion and desire for making fine wines in the confines of their garage slowly grew into a full-time career. In 2003, they quit their day jobs and devoted all of their time to establishing their first winery.
The Line Shack Winery began in an old cowboy cabin located on the Balentine family property in Chualar Canyon, Monterey County. Bob’s dad affectionately named the old cabin the “Line Shack” and it was a place of many family gatherings and celebrations. Drawing on the sense of family and roots that the property represented, the Balentines focused on crafting affordable, world-class wines from California’s Central Coast for their Line Shack brand. Demand grew, and the Balentines quickly realized the desire for Monterey wines extended across the country.
With their second winery project, the Balentines decided to pay homage to their Monterey roots. The 831 Wine Company was established in 2012, showcasing wines made exclusively from Monterey County fruit. The portfolio highlights the region’s diverse microclimates and vineyards best-suited for each grape variety.
The 831 Winery was created to take the guesswork out of selecting wines from Monterey County. By hand-selecting fruit from premium vineyards throughout the county, our wines showcase the best that Monterey has to offer; all under one umbrella of a unique 831 area code themed label. We hope you enjoy our family of wines!
